Wildfires can ignite and spread in minutes, threatening lives, property, and entire communities. Whether you’re a homeowner, business owner, or part of a firefighting crew, preparation and awareness are vital. McNeil & Co.’s WildPro Insurance Program—the first-ever property and casualty insurance program designed specifically for the wildland fire suppression industry—goes beyond traditional coverage to promote safety, readiness, and resilience. Informed by more than 30 years of experience insuring the fire industry and insights from wildland firefighting experts, WildPro understands the unique risks and challenges faced by those on the front lines.
The following guide outlines practical steps to help you monitor conditions, prepare for evacuation, communicate effectively, and stay equipped during wildfire events.
Monitor:
- Watch local news media for weather conditions and fire reports.
- Fire Weather Watch: weather conditions are favorable for wildland fires within the next 3 days
- Red Flag Warning: critical fire weather conditions are present now or expected within 24 hours
- Subscribe to mobile and email alerts in your community
- Listen to the Emergency Alert System (EAS).
- Monitor online maps for updated locations and projected locations of fires.
Evacuate:
- Follow evacuation orders in your area immediately.
- Plan and practice evacuation routes and modes of transportation from your home.
- Have alternate escape routes in the event planned routes are blocked.
- Have pre-determined evacuation routes from areas your family frequents including work and school.
- Have multiple locations (friends, family, etc.) to relocate to.
Communicate:
- Create a plan on how to notify members of your household of fire weather watches, red flag warnings, and evacuations.
- Consider a text message notification with your family.
- Have a predetermined emergency meeting place if you cannot return to your home.
- Create a list of emergency contacts outside the area you may need to reach.
Go-Bag/Emergency Supplies
- Create a bag or kit that is ready to be taken with you during an emergency evacuation.
- Keep this bag in your home for you and your family.
- It is also a good idea to have small kits available in your vehicle and workplace if you need to shelter away from home.
- Monitor the supplies in your bag each year.
- Some items to include in the bag include:
- Water
- Non-perishable food/can opener
- Flashlight
- Batteries
- First-aid Supplies
- Cell phone with charger and mobile charging block
- Battery-powered radio
- Face mask for breathing smoky air
- Small tool kit
- Personal sanitation supplies (toilet paper, baby wipes, garbage bags, etc.)
- Other important items that may not be part of a go-bag include:
- Prescription medication
- Cash/checks
- Important documentation
- Insurance policies, mortgage information, birth certificates, etc.
- Extra bedding or sleeping bags
- Matches or a lighter
- Supplies for your pet
Wildfires are unpredictable, but your response doesn’t have to be. By taking proactive steps—staying informed, maintaining clear communication, and keeping essential supplies ready—you can better protect your family, property, and crew.
