Summary:

The Commercial Claim Supervisor oversees a team of claims professionals responsible for managing and resolving commercial insurance claims, with a specialized focus on educational institutions. This leadership role ensures operational excellence, regulatory compliance, and high-quality service delivery across all phases of the claims lifecycle. The Supervisor provides technical guidance, monitors performance metrics, and fosters a collaborative, accountable team culture.

This position requires strong leadership, advanced claims expertise, and the ability to navigate complex stakeholder relationships, particularly within academic environments.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  1. Team Leadership & Oversight
    • Supervise daily operations of the commercial claims team, ensuring timely and accurate claim handling.
    • Provide coaching, mentoring, and performance feedback to adjusters and specialists.
    • Conduct regular team meetings and one-on-one sessions to support development and alignment with departmental goals.
  2. Technical Claims Guidance
    • Serve as a subject matter expert on complex claims, including coverage interpretation, liability assessment, and settlement strategy.
    • Review and approve reserves and settlements within authority limits.
    • Escalate high-exposure or sensitive claims to senior leadership with recommendations.
  3. Quality Assurance & Compliance
    • Monitor claim files for accuracy, completeness, and adherence to company standards and regulatory requirements.
    • Implement process improvements and contribute to policy updates.
    • Ensure compliance with internal audit protocols and external regulations.
  4. Stakeholder Engagement
    • Act as a primary contact for escalated issues involving insureds, agents, attorneys, and educational institutions.
    • Facilitate resolution of disputes and ensure professional, empathetic communication.
    • Represent the claims department in cross-functional meetings and client engagements.
  5. Reporting & Analytics
    • Track team performance metrics and prepare reports for leadership.
    • Analyze claim trends and recommend strategies to mitigate risk and improve outcomes.
    • Support budgeting and forecasting efforts related to claims activity.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Bachelor’s degree or advanced certifications (e.g., AIC, CPCU) preferred.
  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience in commercial claims, with experience adjusting and claim resolution, prior claims supervisory experience preferred.
  • Experience working with public school entities or educational institutions is strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of various state regulations as they apply to benefits administration and claim adjudication.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • The ability to succeed and excel in a collaborative and team-based environment.
  • Strong time management and desk management skills.
  • Knowledge of and ability to operate efficiently in a Windows-based environment using Excel, Word, and Outlook as well as company claim administration software.
  • Ability to work independently and to carry out assignments to completion.
  • Growth potential beyond current role.
  • Occasional travel required for field inspections, team meetings, or client visits.

Hours: Full-time, EST
Compensation:
$70,000 – $115,000
Location: Cortland, NY / Long Island, NY
