Do you have staff driving company owned vehicles? If so, not only do you have a responsibility to provide your staff with a safe and reliable vehicle, but you also have a responsibility to equip them with any emergency items they may potentially need while operating in that company vehicle. We may be prepared in our daily environment with policies, procedures, building evacuation routes— even emergency kits, but our company vehicles may be the day-to-day “environment” for some of our staff.

While operating company vehicles, staff can encounter a slew of potential emergency situations such as a vehicle accident, flat tire, vehicle breakdown, vehicle fire, weather events, riots or even accidentally running out of gas, etc.

Company vehicles should contain several preparedness items to help keep our staff safe and equipped in the event of an emergency. Consider including the following safety items in a designated vehicle emergency kit at a minimum for each company vehicle:

  • First Aid Kit
  • Portable Fire Extinguisher
  • Jumper Cables
  • High Visibility Vest
  • Flares or Reflective Triangles
  • Tire Repair Kit & Spare Tire
  • Vehicle Incident Report Form
  • Water or other Non-Perishable Foods
  • Emergency Radio
  • Flashlight & Extra Batteries
  • Blankets/Extra Clothing

Additionally, it is critical to regularly review the contents of these vehicle emergency kits with staff to ensure they know where it is located on a vehicle and how to utilize everything in case of an emergency.
