Each year, our community gathers at Homer Hops Brewing for a day that blends gratitude, celebration, and purpose. The Believe 31 First Responder Day—presented in partnership with ESIP and Homer Hops—has quickly become one of the most meaningful annual traditions in our region. What began as a simple idea has grown into a powerful tribute to the firefighters, EMTs, and emergency service personnel who stand ready for us every day.

This year’s event once again brought families, first responders, and community members together for an afternoon filled with laughter, great food, cold beer, and heartfelt moments. The video above captures what makes this day so special: children climbing in and out of fire trucks, friends gathering over picnic tables, raffle baskets drawing excited crowds, and the unmistakable sense of camaraderie that fills the air from the moment the event begins.

Over the footage, you’ll hear Patrick Quinn of ESIP explain why this day matters so deeply. As he shares, we come together not just to celebrate our first responders, but to support them—especially those fighting battles most of us never see. Cancer and life-threatening illnesses continue to impact firefighters and EMS personnel at alarming rates. Believe 31 exists to support these heroes and their families during their toughest days, offering both financial assistance and emotional support when it’s needed most.

That mission is woven into every part of this event. From the volunteer teams assembling raffle baskets to the fire departments rolling their trucks onto the grounds, every participant plays a role in lifting up the people who dedicate their lives to protecting ours. And thanks to the generosity of attendees, sponsors, and donors, every dollar raised stays right here in our community, assisting first responders across Cortland, Madison, Onondaga, and Oswego counties.

But beyond the fundraising, something even more powerful happens here: connection. For one afternoon, first responders aren’t answering calls or rushing into danger—they’re enjoying a beer, listening to music, chatting with friends, and being reminded that their work is seen, appreciated, and valued. Families get a chance to meet the people behind the uniforms. Kids experience the magic of sitting in a fire engine or watching a helicopter land. And the community gets the rare opportunity to say “thank you” in a way that feels personal and heartfelt.

As Patrick says in the video, this is why we come back every year. Because honoring our first responders shouldn’t be reserved for moments of tragedy. It should be woven into the rhythm of our lives, just as their dedication is woven into the safety and wellbeing of our communities.

Believe 31 First Responder Day is a celebration—but it’s also a promise. A promise that we will stand by the people who stand by us. A promise that no first responder will face their toughest days alone. And a promise that this event, and the spirit behind it, will continue to grow year after year. We’re already looking forward to the next one.
