NEW YORK STATE FIRE DISTRICTS REFORM

New York State Fire Districts Reform

Legislation enacted in 2006 institutes a number of significant changes designed to strengthen fire district and fire company accountability and oversight. The Office of the State Comptroller will be helping to provide the training, guidance and technical assistance necessary to understand and comply with these new requirements. Specific information on these changes or questions can be directed to localgov@osc.state.ny.us

One of these reforms is the requirement for training of fire district commissioners. Every fire commissioner who is elected, reelected, appointed, or reappointed must attend and successfully complete a prescribed training course including Fire District Management; Financial Administration; Travel Procedures and Policies; Procurement and Disposition of Fire District Assets; Internal Controls and Detection of Fraud and Abuse; and Conflicts of Interest and Ethics.

The new legislation also requires Boards to develop a Fire District Code of Ethics. Click here to view a sample Code of Ethics or you may download it here.
