LOSS CONTROL Training

The ESIP Loss Control Department places a high value on training. In today’s ever changing environment when it comes to firefighting and emergency medical services it becomes difficult for individual organizations to provide the most up to date training to their members. ESIP is able to supply years of experience working with emergency service organizations nationally to assist all of our valued clients. Our trainers are leaders in the emergency service community and have spent many years honing their individual skills.

EMERGENCY VEHICLE DRIVER TRAINING
This is a two-day driver education course covering the skills and knowledge required to operate emergency vehicles. It is offered to better prepare drivers to cope with the extra demands placed upon them when operating in emergency operations. The multimedia workshop includes slides and videotapes as well as "hands on" driving.


INTERSECTION ACCIDENT PREVENTION COURSE
"INTERACT" is a self-taught program which will reduce the likelihood of emergency vehicles becoming involved in the worst type of accident, intersections. This package is complete with a professionally produced video, instructor guidebook, sample press release and tests. In addition, registration is available for a regularly updated poster service.


DEFENSIVE DRIVING (POINT & INSURANCE REDUCTIONS WHERE PERMITTED)
Upon Completion of this classroom session, students may have points removed from their personal driving records and be eligible for a discount on their personal liability and collision insurance in accordance with respective state laws. There is a fee for this class.


SAFE VAN OPERATIONS
Does your organization operate a van to transport people? Vans operate differently from cars and drivers of vans require specialized training to avoid tragic incidents including rollovers. ESIP now offers a self-taught class on the safe operation of vans. The program including video and slides may be borrowed for a two week period and then returned. ESIP will supply student workbooks for all attendees. Don’t let your organization be involved in a tragedy! Have your drivers equipped with the knowledge to make the trips safely.


UTILITY TRUCK OPERATIONS
Many emergency service organizations have utility trucks for a variety of details and assignments. This self-taught class is designed to train individuals on particular issues involved with operating such vehicles. If your organization is operating a utility truck, all operators should go through this vitally important program.


EMERGENCY VEHICLE ACCIDENT CASE STUDIES
Experience is a great teacher. With this in mind, ESIP has developed a number of case studies of actual emergency vehicle accidents. The studies delve into the background of the incident, the occurrence itself, and the aftermath. These case studies are an excellent addition to your existing driver training, sparking lengthy and lively discussions.


VIPER
Over half of all emergency responders report having been involved in a violent situation at least once in their career. Violence Intervention by Prevention for Emergency Responders is a three hour training course meant to increase the awareness level of the emergency responder. With this awareness, participants carry knowledge with them to the emergency scene to help prevent violence from occurring. The program is self-taught and all aspects are on a CD-Rom.


VIDEO LIBRARY
ESIP maintains a library of popular up-to-date video training tapes covering a number of topics for training purposes. These tapes may be borrowed at no charge for a period of 14 days at a time. Postage paid return envelopes included so returns are convenient and cost free.


EMS LIBRARY
ESIP has a library of reference books on various topics devoted to the Emergency Medical Services. The topics of the books include EMS safety, ergonomics, public relations, developing an infection control program, and others. ESIP clients may borrow these books at no cost.


FIRE SERVICE LIBRARY
ESIP maintains a library of reference books on various topics devoted to the Fire Service. The topics of these books include alarm system information, fire investigation, safety, retention and recruitment, fire prevention and others. ESIP clients may borrow these books at no cost.


TIPS (Alcohol Management Training)
TIPS is a training program that develops skills used to help prevent the misuse of alcohol and reduce drunk driving. The class teaches students to detect signs of intoxication and intervene effectively to prevent alcohol related problems. There is a fee for this class.


ESIP SEMINAR SERIES
ESIP is available to provide seminars to large organizations such as statewide associations. These seminars are unique and provide insightful information, which is designed to make the attendees think and perform as better organizational leaders and members.   • EMS RISK MANAGEMENT WORKSHOP
    This class was developed by attorneys who are involved with EMS liability on a daily basis. The session revolves around providing better service while reducing the risk of being sued. The course defines "standard of care", "true emergency", "good Samaritan" laws, as well as vehicle and traffic laws relating to ambulances. It also details the importance of following protocols, completion of PCR’s, and safe emergency vehicle operation.

  • LIABILITY ISSUES IN THE EMERGENCY SERVICES
    Emergency Service Organizations, their leadership and members are being sued with more frequency every year, with larger payments being awarded. In addition to the monetary sums involved, the organization and membership suffer from losing work time for court appearances, stress, and the poor publicity shed upon them. This lecture reviews recent case history to better define the problems and makes recommendations to lessen the chances of litigation and reduce the severity of future actions.

  • COPING WITH CHANGE IN THE FIRE SERVICE
    Over the last 10 years, the fire service has seen more change than is has in centuries. This change has had a far-reaching effect on almost everything and has become a fire officer’s nightmare. This seminar is designed to help the officer cope with change, by understanding the underlying factors that have caused it. The lecture also delves into controlling change and how everyone in the fire service has the opportunity to do just that.

  • SEXUAL HARASSMENT SEMINAR
    Sexual harassment has presented problems from litigation as well as many embarrassing headlines. This seminar, developed by attorneys specializing in the subject deals with topics such as "What is Sexual Harassment", "Why all the Concern?", "Conduct That Crosses the Line", as well as management’s responsibility in preventing/stopping sexual harassment and how to protect your organization.

  • AVOIDING INTERSECTION ACCIDENTS
    Intersection accidents with emergency vehicles kill and injure many emergency service workers as well as the general motoring public every year. This lecture reviews these terrible statistics and hones in on the most dangerous part of the trip, the intersection. The instructor examines the need for lights and sirens, defines a true emergency, and discusses the proper means to operate in an emergency mode. All emergency vehicle drivers should attend this course.

  • VEHICLE LIABILITY ISSUES
    This lecture looks at emergency vehicle accidents from the leadership prospective, discussing the emergency organization leadership’s liability in vehicle accidents. The class looks into the problems that occur after an accident affecting management including loss costs, downtime and stress. Methods of reducing the exposure to such accidents, which are available to the organization leadership, are discussed including reviews of previous loss history.

  • CONTROLLING PREMIUMS THROUGH RISK MANAGEMENT
    This class designed for use by EMS agencies reviews what factors increase insurance premiums and what indicators insurance companies look for when deciding upon insurability and premium development. High frequency and high severity claims are discussed for each line of coverage and basic risk management solutions are reviewed for each.

  • WRITING REPORTS
    The most mundane part of the job is still very important. A well-written report may be a lifesaver to an emergency service organization years after an incident, in a courtroom. Reports impact almost everything we do including future budgeting, protocol development, policy and procedure review, attendance records, accident details, training plans and concerns, and in EMS providing proper patient care after we’ve left them in an emergency room.

    This short (about 1 hour) session will review the important role reports play in what emergency service organizations do and will describe ways to improve your organizations report writing skills.

  • PROTECTING YOUR ORGANIZATION’S FINANCES
    Emergency Service Organizations have seen an increase in embezzlement of funds over the last few years. Fire Departments and EMS Organizations never imagined it could happen to them and most involved theft by a trusted member.

    This session reviews the recent changes in the Universal Commercial Code for the banking industry, which redefines the responsibilities of parties regarding negotiable instruments such as checks. It also develops good loss control and audit practices which are easily put into effect to reduce the chances of theft.

  • FIREFIGHTER HEALTH AND SAFETY
    Injuries and deaths of firefighters continue to occur at unacceptable levels. This program looks at recent statistics and defines the problem of safety both on and off the fireground. The students are made aware of the most dangerous factors facing them in this hazardous occupation and what they can and should do to help avoid a tragedy in their own fire department.

  • EMERGENCY SERVICE RISK MANAGEMENT
    This is an advanced level class for emergency service leadership and persons directly involved with decision making concerning safety and health of members. The class is based on risk management policies and procedures successfully utilized by the military for several years.

  • OPERATION LIFESAVER
    Emergency vehicles and highway/rail grade crossings could be a combination spelling disaster. This program is directed at EMS Workers and Firefighters who respond to emergencies. Its purpose is to make them aware of the potential dangers that exist at highway/rail grade crossings, and the steps to take to ensure their own safety as well as those in their care.

  • DEVELOPING A DRUG AND ALCOHOL POLICY
    The abuse of illegal drugs and alcohol affects all walks of life, and people involved with firefighting and EMS are not immune. There are many reasons for a fire department to develop and institute a drug and alcohol policy; to enhance the safety and efficiency of your department, to comply with laws and codes, and most important, to assist one of your members who may have an addiction problem. This seminar will assist in writing your own policy and guidelines. Students will review codes and standards relating to drug and alcohol policies as well as testing programs. They will learn how to avoid conflicts with search and seizure laws and self-incrimination statutes.

  • RECOGNIZING THE SIGNS OF SUBSTANCE ABUSE
    Substance abuse is a disease which can affect anyone, including emergency service workers. This seminar is designed to explain various types of life altering substances and how they affect a person. It also details telltale signs in someone’s personality and work efforts which may indicate that they are having problems with substance abuse. It is imperative that these people be removed from activities which may prove dangerous to both themselves as well as others, and receive the proper help as soon as possible.

  • LIVE BURN FIRE TRAINING SAFETY
    While it is understood that live fire training is an important part of the learning experience for firefighters, it is also quite dangerous and should not be attempted without full understanding of the hazards involved. This course has been developed to better explain the elements of the National Fire Protection standard 1403, "Live Fire Training Evolutions." This standard was written by a technical committee with many years of experience in such trainings and compliance and has proven to be a successful blueprint to safe live burn training exercises.

  • REDUCING EMERGENCY VEHICLE ACCIDENTS: A MANAGERIAL APPROACH
    When we think of training to reduce vehicle accidents, we usually relate to driver training; however proper management of the driving risk can have a greater impact on accident reductions. Emergency Services Insurance Program recently completed a study comparing managerial approaches to reducing emergency vehicle accidents. This lecture details the findings of that study which indicated several areas controlled by upper management which will have a significant impact on vehicle collision rates and severity.


OPERATION SafeEMS
This is a CD based training program to assist in safe patient handling. The program covers both health and safety of the EMS provider as well as the comfort and safety of the patient. The program has a flexible delivery format which includes presentation for group or individual settings. It also includes interactive quizzes and scenarios as well as additional resources in Power Point and PDF for easy integration into existing training programs.
